A Small Sample of Road Safety Skills Sessions in Southland RoadSense Schools...Ruru (Special Education) School
enjoyed several practical cycling sessions over 3 weeks with Constable Lohrey and myself.
Students may have a range of mental and physical disabilities -many are severe, therefore teaching opportunities need to be hands on, and repeated on a regular basis.
The practical cycling sessions were complimented with 'in class' teaching on keeping safe on the bikes-helmets, high vis,hazards etc.
It was an absolute pleasure to see the confidence and skill level increase in most of the students over the three weeks-go Ruru!
Waverley Park
Waverley students completed a cycling session at the Velodrome as part of their EOTC programme.
Here they experienced cycling on a fixed wheeled bike, and on an international standard track-very challenging!
Prior to the camp, all students undertook a safe and responsible cycling session with me at school.
Topics covered were correct use and importance of wearing a helmet, and being predictable on a bike.
Sustainable and active transport options were discussed as well.
Students enjoyed the cycling session, with many stating that it was their highlight of the camp.
New River Primary
New River Primary embraced Feet First week, not only for the week, but for all of Term 1. Teachers complimented the initiative with a safe and responsible pedestrian focus-
jointly presented by NZ Police and RoadSense. Teaching covered kerb drill, sneaky driveways, dangers in car parks etc.
Room 14 went on to win a class prize from the Feet First group. Included in the prize were movie tickets, hacky sacks, pedometers and much more.
Well done to Gina and her awesome Rm 14 team!
James Hargest Junior College
As part of the EOTC programme-all Year 7 students @ James Hargest Junior College undertook safe and responsible riding workshops at Omaui Camp.
This was delivered by PEO Marty, and supported by myself.
Students experienced challenges of riding through, over and at times under hazards they might commonly experince in off road cycling. Correct helmet wearing, hazard identification, safety gear, along with bike safety checks reinforced and enhanced the sessions.
Great fun in the sun!
Invercargill Middle
Students at Invercargill Middle became a whole light brighter in Term 1!
Through Road Safety Southland (with funding from the Community Trust and Kia Motors), every student received a high vis vest to wear to and from school.
This initiative was celebrated by the whole school walking an inner city circuit, showing off their vests and celebrating Feet First Week! To support both the vests and Feet First, staff reinforced the key messages of being safe and responsible passengers with in teaching and learning sessions facilitated by me. Students practised crossing car parks, sneaky driveways and busy streets.
Well done Middle!
